My views on Chong Boon school rules
Is it necessary to implement school rules and abide by it at all times? Well, of course. School rules are implemented to mantain order and discipline and keeps the school safe and conducive for learning. Punishments ensure that students abide by the school rules and do not commit the same mistake again and learn from their past mistakes. In Chong Boon, we emphasize a lot on ABC. They are, Appearance, Behaviour and Confidence but for the rules, it is Attendance instead of Confidence. Beside it, we also have our school core values, PRIDE. It is mainly Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication to nation and last but not least, Excellence. In Chong Boon, the punishments slightly differs from other schools. When students in Chong Boon commits a slight mistake, they will get punish by staying back after school. It is known as detention but in Chong Boon, it is referred as Pride Time. When a student commits a serious offence, boys will be canned publicly while girls will be suspended and if things go beyond that, one might even be expelled. It is best to abide by the rules as every action is followed up by a consequence.
Attendance is important as the student might miss out lessons and CCA and as a result, affect her academic performance. It also shows in regards to the respect the student shows towards the school as well as to the teachers. Attendance also shows one's self discipline. Truancy is an example of one that do not exercise self-discipline. In Chong Boon truancy is not treated lightly as the attendance of students in school is very important, thus Chong Boon is very strict about it. This is also one way to teach student how to discipline themselves in order to survive in the outside world.
Appearance. Why is it compulsory for students to wear the school uniform and ensure that it is neat at all times? School unform is use to indentify yourself from other schools and when wearing the school uniform, you are representing your school so you should be proud of it instead of thinking that it is ugly and make modifications to the uniform. Students in Chong Boon might feel that the material that is used to make the uniform is very warm and stuffy but whatever it is, they still have to wear and respect it. The appearance of the student does not only consist of the uniform. Other components like the hair is included too. Hair should not be dyed or highlighted. Not only that, students should not wear any jewellery except for a pair of ear-studs for girls.
In my opinion, Behaviour and self-discipline is the most important in Chong Boon as it apparently teaches the students on becoming a thinking and gracious citizen because, if, the students do not have the heart to repent, no matter how hard and harsh the consequence might be, the students will continuosly repeat their mistakes and not learn anything from their lessons. These cases are sometimes related to the parents as if the parents do not pay enough attention to their child, they could easily go astray because their parents do not pay enough attention to them, and in order to get attention, they go astray and break the school rules.
Have you wondered why we have to abide by so many school rules? Without rules in chong boon, the student will lose control easily and there will be chaos everynow and then. That is why Chong Boon has come up with so many rules just for the sake of the student's well-being. To conclude everything, school rules are implemented for a purpose. Since it is meant to help us, we should abide by the rules, and treating it that it is for your own good and discipline yourself at the same time.

Chinese New Year-What does it mean to me?Just what is Chinese New Year? There is actually a lot more to it than lion dances and firecrackers. Chinese New Year is the first day of the lunar calendar so it is also called the Lunar New Year and is also referred to as the Spring Festival since it is the beginning of the Spring term, which is the first term of the 24 terms on the lunar calendar. Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon fifteen days later. The preparation starts a month before the new year. The preparation includes thoroughly cleaning and decorating the house, buying new clothes, preparing enough food for at least two weeks. The decorations are highly symbolic with a lot of lucky words, printed paintings and red colours everywhere. Everyone gets a haircut before the new year so everything and everyone looks new and fresh on the new year.
The New Year's Eve is the time for families. The New Year Eve's dinner is the biggest dinner of the year, much like Thanksgiving dinner. It is known as the reunion dinner as families will come together on this day to have a meal. The dinner is full of symbollic meaning, such as Chinese dumplings implying wealth since they have the shape of ancient Chinese gold or silver ingots. Everyone, even kids, drinks a little Jiu (usually hard liquor), which symbolizes longevity since Jiu has the same pronunciation as longevity in Chinese. Then the family chats while watching national TV shows or listening to radio together until the coming of the new year. On the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, every door in the house, and even windows, have to be open to allow the old year to go out and children will also stay awake throughout the night to pray for the good health and longevity of their parents. This is known as ‘Shou Sui’.
The first day of the Lunar New Year is "the welcoming of the gods of the heavens and earth. "Many people abstain from meat on the first day of the new year because it is believed that this will ensure long and happy lives for them. An ancient custom called Hong Bao (Red Packet) takes place. Children wake up early to find small red envelopes containing sweets or money under their pillows and married couples give unmarried adults small packets of money and then the new year greetings begin. It is a time when families visit the oldest and most senior members of their extended family, usually their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents. When visiting a house or family for Chinese New Year, it is tradition for the family to display a spread of chinese delicacies for the guests to eat. These delicacies includes mandarin oranges, melon seeds, nian gao which is also known as new year cake, and lastly roasted barbecue pork also known as bakkwa.
The second day of the Chinese New Year is for married daughters to visit their birth parents and the Chinese also pray to their ancestors as well as to all the gods. They are extra kind to dogs and feed them well as it is believed that the second day is the birthday of all dogs. The seventh day of the New Year is the day for farmers to display their produce. These farmers make a drink from seven types of vegetables to celebrate the occasion. The seventh day is also considered the birthday of human beings. Noodles are eaten to promote longevity and raw fish for success. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival day, it is celebrated as ‘Yuan Xiao Jie’. On this day, families eat sweet glutinous rice balls known as ‘tangyuan’, brewed in a sweet soup.
To sum up everything, Chinese New Year marks a new beginning not only for the chinese but for everyone and it is also a time for us to have fun and enjoy. More importantly, it is a time to get together with family members and friends to keep up with them and as for children, it is a time for them to collect Red Packets!

My journal on my Singapore flyer experience
On Friday, 7 march 2008, I went on a fascinating learning journey on the world's biggest observation wheel, The Singapore Flyer. When I first heard that the secondary three students are going on The Singapore Flyer, I was extremely excited as I heard and passed by it a couple of times but did not have a chance to be in one of the capsules but now, I have the opportunity to be inside one of the capsules which will go about forty-two storey up high and I could see the spectacular view of the lion city. I expected the ride to be fast and unstable but to my surprise, it is the total opposite. It is very slow and very stable but however, there are still a few classmates of mine who were still afraid as they have acrophobia but they did manage to overcome it and enjoy the ride.
The Singapore Flyer is located somewhat in the middle of all the attractions that Singapore has developed over the years and as we travel forty-two storeys up high, we can have a bird's eye view of everything. There is a mini rainforest at the flyer, the serenity there overwhelmed me. There were many different types trees in the rainforest which helps to reduce the amount of heat and carbon dioxide that is release and make the whole place cooling even though it is not air-conditioned. It is a different feeling when you are on board the flyer and in the rainforest. The whole place is clean and green.
Before the ride, cacophony of students' chatter could be heard as they were all anxious to get inside the capsule. The wheels moved continuously and there were about 20 of us so we all were trying to jump into the capsule as quickly as possible as we were scared that we could not get into the capsule. As the capsule moved up, i could see the Esplanade, Merlion Park and the Floating Stadium. These were the landscapes that caught my attention because of the way they were built. They were all built in such a way that would catch people's attention easily for example, the durian-like structure of the Esplanade. The most exciting moment of the flight is at the highest point because we could see high-rise buildings and skyscrapers that shows us a lot on the development of Singapore. I was filled with anxiety and was very observant throughout the "flight" as it was the first time and we must look out for certain things to complete our assignments and i also felt that there was ample time to observe everything as it was a slow thirty minutes ride. I think that the landscape would look better if i had taken the flight in the evening as the sunset in the horizon would blend in nicely with the surrounding skyscrapers.
A memorable incident which happened while I am in the capsule was that we all tried to help the one or two of my classmates who had acrophobia. Instead of laughing and making fun of them, we encouraged them and helped them overcome their fear, unlike the other half of my classmates who where all in the other capsule. There were two boys who had acrophobia and remain seated throughout the whole flight. The boys in that capsule were laughing and making fun of them. Therefore, I am proud my classmates who were in the same capsule as me as they were selfless.
In conclusion, I think that it is a trip that was definitely worth going. It was a really fun and enjoyable experience and it would be great if I have the chance to experience it once again. I would recommend the flight to my friends and family members because of the magnificent view and good things are meant to be shared and not kept within yourself.

Technology- A threat or a promise?
Technology. Technology is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their inter-relation with life. However, there are good and bad things about it. Take for example, a mobile phone, it may seem that it has ample benefits but, there are some disadvantages too.
Our technology is constantly improving causing our life to be made easier and much more convenient. Due to technology, communication around the world has been made possible and companies are able to set up branches all around the world. In the future years, technology could be so advanced that cures for incurable diseases would be found.
However, there is a downside to such improved technology. For example, automobiles are becoming more advanced and the demand for them is higher. When automobiles are widely purchased and used, more carbon monoxide is being produced by these automobiles. Carbon monoxide is a type of harmful gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect. This greenhouse effect will eventually deplete the ozone layer away which causes global warming. Therefore even technology has its threats.
In conclusion, technology can be a promise and even a threat to us. New technology can help us in ways but we also have to take note how it can harm us. It all depends on how we manage it and we must do our part do our part to stop global warming.

Has the internet caused more harm than good?
Has the internet caused more harm than good? There is no direct answer to this question, so, the answer can be either yes or even no. The answer varies because different people have different points of views. For me, the answer is no, the internet caused more good than harm because, now, the technology is so advanced that we cannot live without computers because they are already part of our lives. Since computers are already part of our lives, then what about the internet?
The internet displays a vast amount of information that can be access easily. The information that the internet displays are useful to students like us and even working adults because projects are given to us and we need to do research on it. The search engines in the internet for example: google and yahoo will provide us with the information we need in a blink of an eye.
Other than providing information, the internet also can be used to communicate with other people online. For example, the MSN messenger is much more convenient than talking on the phone, wasting money and breath. The MSN messenger is free and can be used anytime you want and we can send files and pictures through MSN. Other than MSN, the E-mail also can send files and pictures to one and other almost immediately.
After long hours of studying, games and songs in the internet can help to distress ourselves. The games can be played for free and songs can be listened and downloaded for free. For this, many teenagers are addicted and many parents agree with the question, the internet caused more harm than good. Other than that, the computer reflects radiation, the addiction will cause their eyesight to deteriorate and it might effect their studies too.
To me, the internet caused more good than harm but you must exercise self-control. If you over used it, of course, it will not be good and effect your health and studies. If you know how to control yourselves, the internet will be very useful and you will enjoy the usage of it.

Interesting thing that happen during holiday
During the long two months holidays, I decided to go out to work, to experience the outside world and to make full use of the time, rather than staying at home, being a couch potato or lazing around at home and letting my parents spoon feed me. I have a pair of hands and legs, and I think that I am already mature enough to think and I should help to lighten their load instead of adding on to their load.
It is easier said than done, I wanted a job and there are other teenagers like me wanting to work as a part timer too. It is not so easy to get one. For the first two weeks of the holiday, my friends and I were looking high and low in the newspapers almost everyday for a job. But, we are too young, most of them wanted people above 16, but we continued trying.
At last, we found one. It is to work as a part time event promoter from 2 to 7 pm everyday and only off on Monday. Our job is to walk up and down Orchard Road to look for married couples and to promote the holiday promotional package to them. Once a married couple signed up for it, we will get fifty dollars commission.
We started with a two weeks trial. Within two weeks, we have to get at least 3 couples to sign up for the package before we get hundred and fifty dollars commission and six dollars per hour starting from the first day. The pay is good but it is not as easy as it seems.
And the worst part is, we have to “cheat” the couple and gain their sympathy. We have to tell them things that are not true. I have to respect the company so I cannot say how we “cheat’ them. After one day, we quit. It is conscience against money. We can always earn back the money but we cannot betray our conscience or we will be guilty for the rest of my life.
